Cell phone ticket in CA, will it affect my insurance?

I got a cell phone ticket in CA. I'm guilty, no denying. I understand that it is "Not" a moving violation so no points given (as per the sheriff that wrote it). Now the ticket comes in the mail with a traffic school option. If it is not a moving violation, is traffic school pointless (no pun intended)?
