Police advice needed?

My dad was a cope for SFPD but that was a long time ago (late 80's) and I feel times have changed he earned his GED and was working as a deputy in the SF sheriffs department. I would like to work for PD or Highway Patrol CHP (California) I recently graduated high school with a basic high school diploma (back in May) and have a crystal clear criminal record I have a long list of references from people I know to people in my family one of which is an FBI agent, the other DEA and another who is a dispatcher plus some family friends who work for West Sac PD. Thanks for any advice, what is the first step I can take to becoming a police officer?
