Why would sheriffs knock on someone's door?

A couple of sheriffs were POUNDING on our neighbor's door. One of them even went around the house, probably trying to see if they were home. After about a half hour or so, they finally left. We live in a nice neighborhood with children and we're just wondering if it's something to be concerned about.
